Top 5 Best Data Science and Machine Learning Courses

New Data Science enthusiasts usually wonder what are the what are the best resources to best master this area. I am a huge fan of online courses (specially if they are free 😆) and decided to share my top 5 favorite ones. All courses below should have their main content available for free, so you can learn Machine Learning without investing too much!


        This course from Stanford University, taught by Trevor Hastie and Robert Tibshirani is an absolutely amazing introduction to Machine Learning. You might have heard about Prof. Tibishirani for being responsible for developing the Lasso method. The classes are a great mix of practical intuition and theoretical concepts. Besides the Professors are funny and adorable (if you don't mind me saying). 

        Here we have a much more practical introduction to Machine Learning and Data Science, with amazing examples in Python and details about arguments to be used in specific packages. This course from  University of Michigan by 
Kevyn Collins-Thompson  
is a great resource if you want to have a good idea of what a Machine Learning project could be in many industry scenarios. Also recommended for people with less Mathematical backgrounds. The Professor does a great job covering complex methods in a very simple way!

        The great Yaser Abu-Mostafa Professor from Caltech shares great ideas about Machine Learning, Statistics and Probability in this course. To me, it feels like seeing Machine Learning from a different angle. Even experienced professionals can learn a lot with this course!

        Another valuable introduction to Machine Learning by MIT. This course covers the most important topics, with great content! I specially loved the exercises available at the platform.

        This Stanford University course by Andrew Ng was the main go-to Machine Learning course for a long time. The Professor explores the mechanics of each Machine Learning method, discussing not only how they are used, but actually how they work underneath the hood.

Slope One

Slope One is a simple and efficient type of recommender system. Introduced by Daniel Lemire and Anna Maclachlan in 2005, it involves a simpler idea than the majority of other collaborative filtering implementations. While these usually calculate the similarity between vectors of items using the cosine or the Pearson methods, the Slope One approach recommends items to users based on the average difference in preferences of items.  The main idea of the algorithm is to create a linear relation between items preferences such as the relation F(x) = x + b. The name "Slope One" cames from the fact that here the "x" is multiplied by "1". It basically calculates the difference between the ratings of items for each user (for every item the user has rated). Then, it creates and average difference (diff) for every pair of items. Error when using smooth.spline

When trying to interpolate a series of data the cubic spline  is a great technique to be used. I choose to use the smooth.spline function, from the R stats package. > smooth.spline(data$x,  data$y ) Nevertheless, while running smooth.spline on a collection of datasets with different sizes I got the following error: Error in smooth.spline( data$x,  data$y),  :   'tol' must be strictly positive and finite After digging a little bit I discovered that the problem was that some datasets were really small and smooth.spline wasn't being able to compute anything. Hence, make sure your dataset is big enough before applying smooth.spline to it. > if(length(data$x) > 30) {  smooth.spline( data$x,  data$y)  } UPDATE:  A more generalized solution would be: > if(IQR(data$x) > 0) {  smooth.spline( data$x,  data$y)  }
